Temple of the Town Gods 城隍庙

Recommender:Paul Miller | 2010-02-25 11:30:00 |
The Temple of the Town God in Shanghai was founded in 1403 to honor local official Qín Yùbó, who had been designated Shanghai's patron god by the Míng Hóngwu emperor (1328-98). It didn't take on its present name until 1929. Note the fine carvings on the roof as you enter the main hall, dedicated to Huo Guang, a Han dynasty general, flanked by rows of effigies representing both martial and civil virtues. Exit the hall north and peek into the multi-faith hall on your right dedicated to three female deities, Guanyin (Buddhist), Tianhou (Taoist) and Yanmu Niangniang (Taoist). Gazing fiercely over offerings of fruit from the rear hall is the red-faced, bearded Town God himself.
